Moving Towards Gender Equality, Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan with its political and cultural past has not always opened itself to the contributions of women till the recent past. Many poetical activities including Socialism have created a better atmosphere for the women in Kazakhstan. Though history holds many heroic women who have played important roles in the country, the problem lies in recording and documenting as credit was always given to men and women who contributed were constantly marginalized. However, any improvement in gender equality came about in the recent past with the various women’s movement and policies of the government.

Though Kazakhstan has been considered one of the most developed of countries among the different countries of Asia, the women from Kazakhstan has not received enough credit. With time and effort, universities began witnessing more women students than ever before. With the government’s effort along with the various movements, emphasis on equal opportunities was given and the country saw a 99.9% literacy rate. The urban spaces of the country have been highly influenced by western ideologies thus giving hopes for the women of Kazakhstan. Since 1991, the government of Kazakhstan has been working towards gender equality.

Many women movements was started in the 90’s such as Women and law, union of Muslim women, women’s ecological association that lead to the emancipation of the Kazakhstan women. Many women have strived to create platforms to develop and succeed but these actions have had many criticisms as well. Many core aspects that contribute to the development of the country such as family education, structuring the cultural and moral foundations of the nation are impossible without the contribution of the women of Kazakhstan. The latest Policy regarding Gender Equality for 2006-2016 holds various means to attain equality of gender in the areas of legislation, social policy, political and social life, economy, development, culture, education and science.
